Key Aspects of Web Design
The design process of a website which includes writing markup for a client and encompasses many skills and disciplines in the production and maintenance of a website is referred to as web design. The various skills and disciplines contained in web design include web graphic design, interface design, user experience design, search engine optimization and authoring which include standardized code and proprietary software. One should always have knowledge regarding web usability which is the ease of use of a website during the process of web design. If the individual is also mandated with creating mark up, he/she should also be well updated to the web accessibility guidelines. A web designer can work all alone in the different web design aspect although some works together as a team covering the different aspects. Web engineering which is a broader scope of web development usually overlaps with web design but the major focus of web engineering are the methodologies, techniques, and tools that form the foundation for web application development which supports their design, development, evolution, and evaluation.
Depending on the part of production processes one is involved in during web design, different variety of tools are used which keeps on being updated by newer standards and software. Vector and raster graphics editor are the mainly used graphic editors editor for creating web formatted imagery or design prototypes. Vectors graphics use polygon to represent images in graphics which can be saved in any vector graphics format such as WMF and PDF. Dot matrix data structure representing a grid of pixels or points of color viewable on a monitor are used in raster graphics and can be saved in any bitmap or raster format such as JPEG and GIF. There are several technologies used in web design including the W3C standards like HTML and CSS. Online proprietary tools provided by web hosting companies which are intended for users to build their private site or it can be done by an offline software running on a computer creating pages and then these pages can be published on any host can be used during web design to create a website. Web design process also uses other tools to check on how the website is working such as the markup validators for checking validity and other testing tools for usability and accessibility to ensure all the guidelines for web accessibility have been met.
During web design process, the web designer and the web developer works hand in hand in creating a website. The visual aspect of a web page are the main focus of a web designer which includes the layout coloring and typography of a web page. A web designer should also have knowledge of the markup language which is a system involved in annotating a document in a way that it is syntactically distinguishable from a text such as the HTML and CSS.
